A Chat With, Jason Hersco
Jason Hersco is a name at the forefront of the deep house scene. His new tracks regularly appear on Beatport and Traxsource DJ charts of other top artists in the deep house scene, such as Scrscru Fred Aster and Traxsrouce essentials – whilst often featuring on the Home Grown Sounds podcast.
Jason grew up in Montreal but is currently based in Toronto, Canada. Whilst in Toronto he promoted at a club called Wildflower for three years. Unfortunately, it closed right before the COVID lockdowns. He informs me that those three years were a wild ride! Recent gigs have included playing at sunset on the rooftop of Hotel X in Toronto. Apparently, there's an amazing view of the CN tower and the rest of the city, which comes alive at dusk. He is hoping he will be playing there again sometime soon and, it seems like Toronto is a place to visit for music heads!
He describes his production style as tasteful (most of the time). He is very selective about the sounds used, and everything has to fit. He has mainly been focusing on deep house, where he tries to create a multi-sensory experience with most of his tracks, they don’t just sound good but evoke emotion, usually erring on the melancholic side. While this is his signature, he points out he also has some party/fun tracks to add to his repertoire too!
This inspiration is what makes, his tack “Everytime” his favourite so far. He really likes the track itself, and it sounds like he has excellent taste as it’s proved popular among a wide audience, which he admits blows his mind. We are not surprised by the track’s success, at all; class shines and it's one of our favourites too.
Musically, Jason’s first inspiration came from the movie Amadeus. Later on, he got really into Jimi Hendrix and guitar, which led to a lot of other rock music and other genres. He progressed to dance music a bit later, near the end of high school/beginning of college after being introduced to it via friends and a roommate who was an aspiring DJ, who introduced Jason to deep house. The more he listened to it the more he fell in love with it.
Most recently, Jason has been working with Travis Emmons, one of his favourite artists. He feels very lucky to have collaborated on a few tracks and says that he has “learned a ton from him, and he's been a huge help in my growth as a producer”.
In an open and honest admission, he tells us he to listens to all types of music. From hip hop to jazz , rock to classical, he draws inspiration from wherever it comes. He also admits he can't nail down any particular artists he's into at this current moment, mainly due to the eclectic variety of music he listens to. He also professes to have a different favourite artist every day! But his favourite of all time? Probably Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis.
Stay tuned as we will be hearing a lot more from Jason – he has some releases coming up on Glasgow Underground, Salted and Hustler Trax. All coming in the next couple of months - so keep checking your favourite DJ sites for his new releases!
He passes his regards and “Thanks to everyone for listening”.
